Tips for excursions!

Mussjön

Mussjön with its bird tower Mussjön is one of Jämtland's most interesting bird locations. Parts of the lake are therefore a bird protection area. In the northern parts, on Mussjönäset, the county administrative board has had a bird tower built. There is an extensive crane migration in the area every spring. A special observation hut has therefore been built near the place where the cranes dance. Mussjön has a fantastic bird life and has been a bird protection area since 1975. Here you can see ducks, cranes, whooper swans, common loons and many other species. If the weather is bad, you can go into the tower where there is a stove, bench and openable windows.

Directions: To find the bird sanctuary, drive from Änge towards Almåsa. The area is about 1.5 km drive from ICA, on the left side. Easy hike, about 2 km from parking down to the lake and the tower. Follow the blue markings. The trail is wet at times, so please wear boots.

The sheepfold trail

Fäboleden along Finnån, Finnsäter: A very pleasant hike or walk is to follow the old pasture trail in Finnsäter. The trail goes along Finnån, to Finnåfallet, and on to the old pastures.

The parking lot is just south of Finnsäter, by the mill and sawmill, and along the trail there are signs telling you what to see along the way. After 500 meters of walking along a rushing river, on the fixed mountain farm road, you come to Finnåfallet. Finnåfallet's water masses pour down the slate slopes and here you can see the Finnsäter slate's easily quarried beds. The gusta industry in Brunflo quarried slate here in the 1940s. To the sound of rushing water, it is nice to make coffee at the well-arranged fireplace near the fall - do not miss this easily accessible experience! The trail then continues on, past the falls.

Nolasjöns Fäbodled

Fäbodleden can be found between Rismon and Enarsvedjan, north of Landösjön. The trail is about 1.5 miles long and runs between 8 pastures. This is where people used to go in the past to herd their animals. At each farm you can find an information board with photos of what it looked like in the past, as well as information about where you are and how far it is to the next farm. If you don't want to hike the whole trail, you can join it from Gammalbodarna, Hålsbodarna, Nybäckesbodarna or Ängesbodarna.
North of Lake Landösjön, the chances of encountering moose in the forest are quite high!

Rocky mountain

(Hiking trail to the summit) 3 km cross-marked trail, with ascent in varying terrain and steep in parts, leading to the summit hut on Hällberget (640 m). At the top are rocks and mountain birch. The trail passes Svedbodarna and Hällängesbodarna.

Hällbärget is a popular excursion destination that offers a magnificent view of the lush meadow slopes of Kaxåsbygden. Large forest areas are mixed with cultivated land and small villages everywhere. At the far end of the horizon are the partly snow-capped mountains. The slopes of Hällberget plunge dramatically straight down into the waters of Hällsjön. Offerdal church in Ede shines white in the landscape. In the cabin you can make your coffee, warm yourself and seek shelter in bad weather. Worth a visit!

Detailed directions: From Kaxås take road 671 towards Bleckåsen. After about 1 km, after passing Åfloån, turn left at the sign "Hällberget". Smaller gravel road leads to the turnaround at Storvallen and parking (about 2 km). Sign at the turnaround shows where the trail starts.

Two fun tips on a gray day!

  1. What I recommend all guests to do on a gray day. About 5min from the cottages you can rent a baking hut for only 100kr a day. There is everything you need to make flatbread. Recipes are also available on site. If you want to do it the old fashioned way, you can rent a baking cabin with a wood-fired oven as well. Really cozy to do for young and old. Then they taste incredibly good when they are smoking fresh ...

Book a bakery at Ica ladan Kaxås or call: 0640 32006

  2. Bowling. Kluks Bowling Hall has 4 bowling lanes and lunch service.

The rock carvings in Gärde

Gärdesån is the site of unique rock carvings. The area around Gärdesån is incredibly beautiful, and in this unique environment you can visit the popular summer café in the log cabin by the river for a couple of weeks in the summer.

Some years, theater is also performed here, attracting visitors from far away. More information about ongoing activities can be found in the events calendar and on the village association's website.

The rock carvings in Gärde

The rock carvings in Gärde are unique and one of Offerdal's prides, something you should definitely not miss when visiting. If you are interested in history, you really get a dose of unique Swedish history, and otherwise you can get a nature experience that is also not to be forgotten.

The moose

During the Stone Age, 7000 years ago, there was a so-called trapping population that periodically stayed near Gärdesjön. They made a living from hunting, fishing and whatever else nature provided. Today we can see the traces they left behind in the form of rock carvings at Gärdeforsen. On the rocky slope in the middle of the rapids are three moose. One of these is carved to life size and is the largest single figure carving in Sweden. On the southern bank of the rapids there are several motifs. One of these is a moose figure and a moose track stamp. A few meters away there are ten human footprints leading to a moose, which is interpreted as a hunting scene. Next to it are four moose track marks and a carving interpreted as a human figure. Were the carvings a story of successful hunting or were they carved to ask the powers that be for good hunting luck? It is likely that the area with the rock carvings was an important cult site throughout the Stone Age.

Directions: From Kaxås, drive towards Rönnöfors. Turn left towards Tångeråsen and Gärde. Drive to the sign "Hällristningar" on the left. Follow the road to its end. At the parking lot there is a handicapped accessible walkway down to the rapids and the rock carvings (however, there are steps down to the rock carvings).
